Afternoon Tea at Home

Afternoon Tea at Home

24th Jun 2020

According to BBC and Google Trends, online searches for cream and afternoon teas to be delivered have surged by up to 750% since the UK went into lock-down.

With restrictions easing it may be possible to sit in a gilded hotel chair and sip from fine bone china very soon. However, many people may prefer to hold this special occasion at home. Especially if you have formed a 'support bubble' with friends and family or still a little reluctant to venture out fully.

Throwing your own afternoon tea party also means that you can control the budget and possibly support your local bakeries, cafes and tearooms at the same time.  Many of which are offering delivery or take away options.

So dust off the bunting and polish the cake stand.  Here is a list of our tops tea recommendations for hosting this fine British tradition at home:

  • Earl Grey Classic - The aromatic flavour of this black tea balances very well with lighter sweets such as shortbread, cake and scones.
  • Assam - A strong, slightly astringent black tea which complements savoury foods like quiche and sandwiches.  With milk and a little sugar it will go nicely with foods that are not overly sweet.
  • Darjeeling - First and Second Flush - Either tea will match savoury foods perfectly well.  Second Flush is also great alongside syrupy puddings.
  • Ceylon Orange Pekoes - Lighter than Assams and Darjeelings. A very popular choice to accompany all aspects of the traditional Afternoon Tea, with or without milk.
  • Vietnam Orange Pekoe - Slightly spicy, low tannin and low caffeine. This tea goes well with both savoury and sweet - preferably without milk.

Finally, don't shy away from herbal options. Chamomile and peppermint teas are lovely alternatives which are not only caffeine free but great with chocolate and fruit.
